The world is facing an era of unprecedented challenges. Armed conflicts, terrorism, forced migration, climate change, biodiversity loss, hybrid threats and democratic backsliding all intersect to form a global “polycrisis” that undermines security, peace and sustainable development. Addressing these interlinked issues requires holistic, multidisciplinary approaches—and leaders equipped to navigate the political, legal, and institutional complexities of our time.
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development (ILSPSD) was created in direct response to this need. This unique two-year programme brings together the expertise of six European degree awarding partner institutions from higher education and a global network of 30 associate partners to train the next generation of international lawyers and policy-makers. Its integrated curriculum combines international law with politics, sustainability and security studies—preparing graduates to understand and shape global governance in times of volatility and transformation.
Mobility is at the heart of the ILSPSD experience. Over 24 months, students study in three or more countries, starting with International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development (on a LL.M. or M.A. study track) at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, continuing with Theories of International Security at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals, before specialising in one of four tracks:
The final semester is devoted to a research dissertation and an optional work placement.
Enriched by summer schools, legal clinics, guest lectures, direct interaction with practitioners, and more, ILSPSD offers a truly comprehensive education. Graduates gain multidisciplinary expertise, practical experience and an international network—skills that open doors to careers in international courts and organisations, the EU, ministries and other governmental agencies, NGOs, think tanks, and beyond.
With its focus on the nexus of law, security, peace and sustainability, ILSPSD equips you to address the defining challenges of the 21st century—and to become part of the solutions shaping our global future.
A truly holistic approach, integrating law, politics, security and sustainability, combined with international mobility and hands-on experience across six leading European higher education institutions.
That’s what makes it unique.
