Entry Requirements

General Entry Requirements

In order to enrol in the ILSPSD, applicants need to have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (a minimum of 180 ECTS – within the European Higher Education Area – or its equivalent) from a fully accredited institution of higher education (within or outside the EHEA), provided that this undergraduate degree grants access to master’s level studies in the country in which the undergraduate degree diploma was issued.

By completing a course, seminar, or module, you get awarded ECTS credit points. Every ECTS credit point represents the amount of workload you accomplished in that period of time. Each ECTS credit represents 25 study hours.

If you have completed your courses outside the ECTS area, your workload must be converted. You need to ask your degree awarding institution for a written statement of the working hours needed for accomplishing each of your (law) courses. When applying please upload this statement and your conversion calculations together with your degree certificate and transcript of records

If you haven’t completed your undergraduate degree by the time of your application but will do so within the year of the intake, you can be admitted conditionally. In this case you will need to upload an official transcript of records of your degree issuing university stating that you will be able to finish your degree in the year of the start of your studies and will be able to hand in the official degree certificate before 30 September of that year.

Entry Requirements of Partner Universities (Semester 3)

Additionally, there are entry requirements based on the study track chosen by the student for Semester 3:

  • University of Glasgow: 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Law. The University of Glasgow may also consider a UK 2.1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent, in international relations, politics, or a relevant social sciences or humanities subject area.
  • Université libre de Bruxelles: LLB or Master’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of 240 ECTS credits (or 4 years of studies) in law or a cognate discipline.
  • University of Tartu: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of 60 ECTS of law or law-related courses.
  • Universidade NOVA de Lisboa: No additional requirements.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English and whose undergraduate degree studies were not completed in English language must achieve the minimum English language proficiency level for admission. The proficiency level can only be confirmed with one of these language tests:

  • IELTS Academic 6.5
  • Internet-based TOEFL test (iBT) with at least 90 points
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) (C1)
  • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) (C2)

All language test results must be no more than 4 years old of the application submission.

It is NOT possible to submit your language test after the lapse of the official application deadline.

In the following two cases, no language test is required:

  1. Your first language is English. Native English language proficiency must be verified by means of a signed declaration from the student.
  2. You have completed (at the time of your application) an undergraduate degree taught entirely in English. This must be verified in the form of a corresponding certificate or transcript indicating that English was the language of instruction.

Please note that the fulfilment of entry requirements will be checked following submission of applications. We cannot provide detailed pre-checks of entry requirements on an individual basis.

Deviating Language Requirements for the Study Tracks in Glasgow and Brussels

If students choose the University of Glasgow for their second year of study, they are required to confirm their English language proficiency level with IELTS 7.0 (with no subset less than 6.5) or equivalent (if English is not their first language or they did not study their undergraduate degree in an English speaking country, as recognised by the UK Home Office).

If students choose Université libre de Bruxelles for their second year of study, they are required to submit a certificate proving a passive level of French:

  • a degree awarded by a higher education institution located in a French-speaking community, or
  • proof of French language skills at level B2 according to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

All language test results must be no more than 2 years old of the application submission.

It is NOT possible to submit them later than the official application deadline.

Students applying to the Glasgow study track should be aware that, if they intend to apply for a UK Student Visa, their English Language proficiency test should be dated within 2 years and 5 months of the programme start date.
