Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

ILSPSD Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applications will open in November 2025. Keep an eye on our websites!

Please note you must include a copy of your scholarship form on your programme application form.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship is awarded for full-time enrolment, and will cover the entire duration of the programme (24 months). The scholarship will be a contribution to the costs incurred by the beneficiary students and shall cover travel, visa, installation and subsistence costs. The amount of the scholarship is 1.400,00 € per month.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships can be offered to students from any region of the world; however, as a general rule no more than 10% of the overall scholarships available in the ILSPSD will be awarded to students with the same nationality (with the exception of students from targeted regions of the world). Moreover, as a general rule, no more than three scholarships will be awarded to students with the same nationality in the same intake under the same category.

Available scholarships

In total, 70 Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available across four intakes of students over the duration of the ILSPSD, with ca. 25% of scholarships awarded to each intake. There are different categories of scholarships available to students from different parts of the world (all regions of the world are covered, but different numbers of scholarships are available):

Category Number of scholarships
EU Member States and Third Countries associated to the Erasmus Mundus programme (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Türkiye and Serbia)  30
Third Countries not associated to the Erasmus Mundus programme  20
Third Countries not associated to the Erasmus Mundus programme (additional scholarships funded by the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA III) including students from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Montenegro)  2
Third Countries not associated to the Erasmus Mundus programme (additional scholarships for targeted regions of world, funded by the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation – Global Europe Instrument (NDICI) for students from Regions 1, 3 and 5-11)  18

Eligibility check

All applications are subject to an eligibility check which covers all aspects of the application: respect of the application deadline, completeness of the application file, eligibility of the candidate in relation to the Erasmus Mundus criteria. Applicants who fail to provide necessary documentation by the appropriate deadline will be excluded from the application procedure and will be informed of the specific reason for ineligibility.

Scholarship competition

To be eligible to be considered for scholarship, you must first have secured a place on the degree programme (unconditional or conditional). The admissions office of Leuphana University of Lüneburg assesses all applications and will reply directly to the applicant to let them know if they have been offered a place. Applicants who receive an offer of a place on the degree programme, and who have submitted the scholarship application on time, will be put forward to the scholarship competition.

Selection criteria

The Scholarship Selection Committee of the ILSPSD Consortium assesses each application according to the following criteria:

  • Academic merit – 50%
  • Supporting personal statement – 30%
  • Quality of (academic) references – 10%
  • Other interests, (work) experiences, etc. – 10%

Important

When a main list scholarship student withdraws, he/she is replaced by the first eligible candidate on the reserve list. In this particular case, the eligibility criterion concerns the nationality of the reserve list candidate and the rule concerning the presence of a maximum of three nationals from the same country among the scholarship holders in each intake. If there are already three other students with the same nationality on the main list, the Consortium will have to take the next eligible candidate respecting its own ranking list (European Commission’s regulations).

Appeal procedure for candidates who fail to secure a scholarship

All candidates will be notified of the decision of the scholarship selection committee by email only by the end of March. Candidates who do not secure a scholarship and who wish to appeal the decision of the scholarship selection committee must do so in writing by email within 2 weeks (14 days) from the point of notification by the ILSPSD Consortium of their failure to win a scholarship. The email should be addressed to the ILSPSD Consortium at the following address: ilspsd@leuphana.de. The email subject heading should contain the words “ILSPSD scholarship appeal”. The reasons for the appeal must be clearly stated in the email. Note: A candidate may appeal ONLY on the grounds of defective or unfair procedure by the ILSPSD scholarship selection committee.

  • EMJMD student scholarships cover the entire duration of the Master course and are awarded exclusively for full-time enrolment in the course. Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national rules and legislation in place. Candidates who will only obtain their first higher education degree at the end of the academic year preceding the EMJMD intake can nevertheless apply for a scholarship and can be selected by the Consortium, under the condition that the student obtains the required degree prior to the beginning of the Master course.
  • Shortly, you will find the ILSPSD Scholarship Student Agreement here.
  • Students who are former Action 1 Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral Course scholarship holders are not eligible for an additional EMJMD scholarship. Successful applicants cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing the EMJMD scholarship studies.
  • EMJMD scholarship holders must spend at least two complete mobility periods in at least two of the Consortium’s full Higher Education Institution partners which are located in different Programme Countries. Each of these mandatory mobility periods must include a volume of study/research or equivalent corresponding to at least 30 ECTS.
  • The mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility neither can they take place in institutions outside the Consortium
  • Additional study/research/thesis preparation/placement periods can take place in other participating organisations in the Consortium (partner and associated partner) under the condition that the activities concerned are implemented under the direct supervision of the Consortium partner.
  • Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders from a Partner Country for periods exceeding three months of the EMJMD spent in any Partner Country.
  • Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders for periods of the EMJMD spent in their country of residence.

Scholarships are dependent on both nationality and residency.

Students with a double nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their scholarship application.

When determining the contribution to participation costs, the Consortium defines the student category – either Programme Country or Partner Country. The definition of the student category depends on his/her nationality and on whether the student resided in a Programme Country for more than 12 months over the last five years before applying (applicable only to students with Partner Country nationality). Therefore:

  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries count as Programme Country students.
  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in a Programme Country are considered as Partner Country students. The five year reference period for this 12 month rule is calculated backwards from the submission deadline.
  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries who do not fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12 month rule) count as Programme Country students.
  • Example: a Serbian student who lived in Germany for 13 months, 3 years before the deadline date should apply as a Programme Country student; a Mexican student who has been living in Spain for 11 months as of the deadline date (and never before in the 5 year period) should apply as a Partner Country student.

The contribution to travel and installation costs takes into account only the residence (as of the deadline date) of the scholarship holder regardless of the category under which the student has applied.

If you’re offered a scholarship, you will be required to provide proof of residency:

  • a residence certificate issued in accordance with the candidate’s municipality normal registration rules
  • a certificate from the candidate’s place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question.

Both documents must have been issued within 12 months before the scholarship submission deadline.

Please note that the data you provide in your application will be shared with the ILSPSD Consortium partners as part of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship review process

Tuition fees (2026-2028)

 €12,000 per annum (2-year programme)

Tuition fees are identical for UK/EU/EEA/ERASMUS associated country students and international students. This global tuition fee is a special feature of the programme, which addresses challenges of global importance.

Tuition fees are set annually in Euro (€) and are maintained for each student cohort.

Fees listed cover tuition only. As the programme contains various mobility periods, students (funded and self-funded) will need to cover their own airfares as well as accommodation costs between each chosen partner.
